Randall was born August 30, 1946, in Fort Worth, TX, to Rev. Hubert Otho and Charles Mary Black. He graduated from North Salinas High School in 1964, California Baptist College in 1968, Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1972, and completed his residency in Psychiatry at Loma Linda University in 1975. Randall was known for his dry sense of humor and unique wit. His love of genealogy and Civil War history was more than his hobby, it was his passion. He was also deeply dedicated to the church and to the field of psychiatry in both California and Tennessee. He worked in this field for nearly five decades and helped change countless lives.
He is survived by his former wife of 32 years, Rosemary Ortega Black; his children, Samuel (Alison) Black, Joel (Kalani) Black, Dereke Ashe, Joshua (Amber) Black, and Julia (Justin) Groce; and his 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Julia (Steve) Cagle, Rebecca (Gary) Vick, and Mary (Brad) Barrett.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Hubert Otho Black and Charles Mary Black, and his siblings, Sandra Kirkwood and Charles Black.
Visitation will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel on January 24, 2026, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with the service to follow.
