Sherrell Gossett, 80, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather left us on June 11, 2015, to be with our father. A member of Red Bank Presbyterian Church, Sherrell was a native of Chattanooga. He began his career as a welder for Combustion Engineering until a stint as a Tech Sergeant in the United States Air Force took him and his wife Joyce to Wethersfield, England, and to Big Springs, Texas. Upon his retirement from the military, he returned to Chattanooga to work for Combustion, and the couple settled in Lookout Valley where they both grew up.
An avid drag racing fan, Sherrell owned a number of race cars during his lifetime and was a fixture at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip for many years. Noted for his ability at mechanics, he was also a talented woodworking hobbyist. The member of the Masonic Lodge was a loyal Tennessee Vols and Atlanta Braves fan.
Sherrell is survived by two daughters, Saxon Henry and Karen (Doug) Beam; two grandchildren, Zac (Tiffany) Beam and Lacey Beam; two great-grandchildren Jayton and Tilly Beam; and sister Nina Baughn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Sherrell be honored by donations to Avalon Hospice, 7625 Hamilton Park Drive, Suite 19, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
