Shirley Eleanor Mahr Brown, 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 9th, 2022. Shirley was born in Kearny, NJ, the daughter of Royal H. Mahr and Margaret E. Cuthbertson in 1930. She graduated as valedictorian of Harrison High School, class of 1948. After high school she attended Washington School for Secretaries.
Shirley met the love of her life, Robert, in Chester, NJ. They married in 1951 and enjoyed 65 loving years together until Robert’s passing in 2017. Shirley worked many years helping to put her husband through college until starting a family in 1956. She lived throughout northern NJ, but ultimately called Mendham, NJ, home where she and Robert raised their three children. Once the children were of school age, Shirley took employment with the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, where she worked until 1988. She was an active member of both Long Hill Chapel in Chatham, NJ, and Mendham Hills Chapel in Mendham, NJ.
Shirley moved to Signal Mountain, TN, in 1988 where she worked for Bethel Bible Village for several years, and upon retirement spent many years traveling with her husband as he consulted throughout the country. She was an active member at Wayside Presbyterian Church and within the Alexian Village community, both of Signal Mountain, TN.
Shirley loved to garden, and had a passion and talent for needlework. She loved her family dearly and cared deeply for friends and her community. Shirley read voraciously with a fondness for mysteries, and treasured reading her Bible. She will be remembered by friends and family as a prayer warrior.
She is survived by her children, Margaret (Jay) Ahstrom of Connecticut, Lois Brown of North Carolina, Robert (Blakely) Brown of Kentucky, and her 5 grandchildren, Emily Ahstrom, Sarah Ahstrom, Hayden Brown, Braeden Brown and Ainsley Brown.
A graveside service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1:00 PM on October 13th, 2022. The family will have a remembrance service of Shirley’s life with friends and family at Wayside Presbyterian Church at 2:30 PM following. Rev. Charles Barrett will preside over both services.
