Sue S. Hurt

Sue Story Hurt, 89, of Chattanooga passed away on Friday, July 29, 2011. She was born in Paris, Tennessee to Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Story. She attended Grove High School, Memphis State University and later graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she was a member of the Golden Key and Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Societies.

After retiring from TVA, Sue was active in volunteer work in her church and community. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga and the Waters Sunday School Class. She served on a number of church committees and for several years was a member of the church staff.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren lovingly called “Mama” Sue. They were always anxious to receive her hugs and kisses and to play in her backyard where she maintained her flower and vegetable gardens.

Sue was preceded in death by Gilbert, her husband of 62 years, a son, Steve, her parents, and a brother, Glenn.

Survivors include three children: Paul (Paula) Hurt of Harrison; Kenneth (Dianne) Hurt of Hixson; and Ann Hurt (Glenn) Stone of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Tara Wattenbarger, Kenda Pernin, Michael Sutherland, Cortney (Dennis) Buckelew, David Hurt, Erin Stone (Jason) Essary and Jim Stone, seven great grandchildren, Brandon Warttenbarger, Tyler Wattenbarger, Margaux Pernin, Blake Sutherland, Alex Buckelew, Addy Buckelew and Harper Ann Essary.

Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
