Vickie Denise Spangler

Vickie was preceded in death by her Father, Joe William Bennett, her Mother, Catherine Louise Jones; her sister, Nadine Boland; her brother, Lamar Bennett; and her son-in-law, Mason Taylor Holmes.

Those she leaves behind to cherish her memory are her adoring children, son, Richard Spangler Jr. (Kagney), daughters Kimberly Klein (Charlie), and Ashley Holmes; her two grandsons, David and Ethan; her sister, Renee Bennett, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Vickie was born on November 19, 1955, at Park Ridge Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She grew up in the Lookout Valley area of Chattanooga, blessed with a large family that included three siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and countless cousins. Vickie often reminisced about big Sunday dinners at her Mamaw’s house where cooking began days in advance to feed the whole family, playing with cousins and friends, and many laughs and jokes with her brother, Lamar. A talented athlete, Vickie grew up playing softball and basketball and continued her love for the game long after high school, playing for the New Salem Baptist Church softball team.

She was a proud graduate of Lookout Valley High School, Class of 1973. A lifelong learner with a heart for helping others, Vickie went on to achieve remarkable academic success. She earned her Bachelor’s in Social Work from the University of Chattanooga (Class of 1998), graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her academic excellence earned her induction into the Psi Chi Honor Society, the Golden Key Honor Society, and recognition as a USAA All-American Scholar. Committed to Social Work, she later earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University (Class of 2012), graduating Cum Laude.

Vickie shared her talents over a twenty-two year career with the Hamilton County Department of Education as a Social Worker, retiring in May 2020. She was highly respected in her field, receiving both a Dedication for Service Award in 2020 and was selected as Social Worker of the Year in 2010. Vickie cared deeply for the families and students she served, consistently going above and beyond to ensure they received the assistance and care they needed. To provide for her family, Vickie was a force of hard work and resilience, often balancing multiple jobs while attending school such as running her own small seamstress business, working as a caregiver, and working at a pharmacy.

In the early 2000s, Vickie was diagnosed with a rare chronic kidney disease. Though she underwent chemotherapy and other debilitating treatments such as dialysis, she never complained. She chose every single day to be her absolute best despite her declining physical health. Known for her authentic laugh and contagious smile, you wouldn’t have guessed she was terribly sick.

Her faith was her anchor. Vickie was a devoted member of New Salem Baptist Church for nearly forty years, joining on August 26, 1984. She loved serving in the children’s ministry, teaching Sunday School, and being a part of the Dove Class. When her mobility became limited in her later years, she remained deeply connected to Jesus and her church community. Her greatest spiritual legacy was ensuring that her own children knew Jesus as their Lord and Savior and were baptized, as well as her entire extended family.

Every experience with Vickie was cherished. Whether she was spending time in the Word with Jesus, attending sporting events, playing games, traveling the world, or gathering with loved ones, she was full of joy. She was a passionate sports fan, especially when it came to cheering on her Atlanta Braves, Tennessee Volunteers Football, and the Lady Vols Basketball teams.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 11, 2026 at New Salem Baptist Church, 9806 Dallas Hollow Road, Soddy Daisy, TN at 11:00 AM EDT with Pastor Alan Rogers officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday evening at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, and prior to the service on Saturday from 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow later in the afternoon at Hooker Cemetery in Wildwood, Georgia.
