Virginia Damewood

Virginia C. Damewood, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 28, 2010, in Katy, Texas, after a brief illness. Virginia was born April 23, 1919, in Boston, MA. She attended high school in Colorado, followed by college at George Washington University, Washington, DC, where she majored in art. While still in Washington, she worked for Senator Johnston. Virginia moved to Hixson, TN, as a young mother and was the secretary and organist for Hixson Methodist Church. Later she worked for the Hamilton County school system, first as a secretary at Dupont Elementary, and ultimately as Administrative Assistant to Superintendent Sam McConnell. Upon retirement, she continued following her lifelong dream of pursuing art by studying under Wayne Wu, where she gained an enthusiasm for watercolor. She had art shows for many years, having her art work displayed in numerous buildings in Downtown Chattanooga. She belonged to various art organizations, including Civic Arts League, Chattanooga Artists Guild, and Tennessee Watercolor Society. Additionally, she was a member of the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Virginia was always a happy, loving and giving lady, with a beautiful smile, and so had many friends and family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eva J. Coulter, and her husband of 51 years, Russell E. Damewood. She is survived by daughters Sherrie (Lynn) Hale of Montgomery, AL, Marion Hickman of Huntington Beach, CA, and son William (Brenda) Damewood of Katy, TX. She had seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 4, 2010, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., with service and interment following. Service will be conducted by Reverend Randy Martin of Hixson United Methodist Church, with eulogy by Judge Clarence Shattuck.

She will be dearly missed, with loving memories, by all that knew her.
