Born in 1940 in Lambert, Mississippi, Walter attended Mississippi State University, where he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order, before earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1963.
After graduating from law school, Walter began a legal career that would span six decades in Chattanooga, Tennessee, including serving as Hamilton County Public Administrator for many years.
While Walter took great pride in his profession, his greatest joy was always his family. He and the love of his life, Bobbie Jean Wells Grantham, shared nearly 65 years of marriage, and together they built a close-knit family that remained the center of Walter's
life.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife and their children: Vicki Grantham Hudson (Layne), Walter Edwin Grantham III (Sharon), and Jennifer Grantham Marks (Miles); grandchildren: Will Hudson, Virginia Hudson, Miranda Grantham, Kalie Grantham Schubert (William), Molly Marks, Miles Marks, Jr., Annie Marks, and Ella Marks; great-granddaughter: Hannah Schubert; by his brothers: Jock Grantham (Anne) and Jim Grantham (Sue); and by many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Scott Grantham, Sr., and Katie Cooley Grantham, and by his brother, Charles Scott Grantham, Jr. (Myrnita).
Outside of his work, Walter treasured the lifelong bond he shared with his brothers. He also enjoyed countless hours with his golfing group at Valleybrook Golf & Country Club. Walter had a quick wit that could lighten any conversation and a generous spirit that made people feel welcome.
The family is grateful for the many expressions of kindness, friendship, and prayer received during this time of loss.
A memorial service will be held at Hixson United Methodist Church, where Walter was a longtime member, at 1:00pm ET on Thursday, July 9 with a reception to follow.
