Mr. Wiley “Leon” Webb, 97, formerly of Signal Mountain, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023 at his residence in Hendersonville, TN. Leon was born in Covington, GA and grew up in Thomaston, GA. He was a US Navy veteran, serving as a radioman 2nd class on the USS Tamalpias during WWII. He moved to Chattanooga in 1957 and was instrumental in starting TV Channel 9. He was the station manager at Channel 9 for over 20 years. In 1972, he started and owned Webbco Graphics for 20 years. Leon was a lifetime faithful deacon at Signal Mountain Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Douglas Webb and Cora Lee Bennett Webb; his wife of 70 years Pauline “Polly” Webb; and his brothers, Elbert and J.D. Webb.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Shelia Burgess, Terry (Bobby) Brown, and Paula (Sam) Yokley; grandchildren, Tony (Laura) Burgess, Shannon Burgess, Jason (Haley) Brown, Angie (J.D.) Freye, Christy (Jeremiah) Tibbs, and Matt (Emily) Yokley; great grandchildren, Ben Freye, Madysson Tibbs, Aubry Tibbs, and Payne Yokley; and sister, Hazel Terry.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 25th from 11:00am to 12:00 pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel in Hixson. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sally Ensley officiating. Leon will be laid to rest beside his beloved Polly in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
