William (Bill) Martin Payne Sr., 93, passed away on June 3, 2026. Born April 22, 1933, William lived in Ooltewah, TN., and leaves behind a life marked by steady devotion, generous care for others, and a warm sense of humor that could lighten the day without ever making light of what mattered.
Bill graduated from Chattanooga Central High School in 1951, beginning a long journey shaped by hard work, resilience, and the kind of quiet faithfulness that shows up day after day—at home, on the job, and in the community.
He served his country in the National Guard and was a member of #558 F&AM Masonic Lodge, as well as a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Alhambra Shrine. Bill’s working life reflected both grit and adaptability: he spent his early career years in law enforcement, then worked for American Machine and Foundry (AMF) in the Bowling Division for several years, traveling extensively. He later went into the insurance business and eventually had his own agency. After his time in insurance, Bill entered the textile business, owning his own business for over 49 years—a testament to his perseverance, thoughtfulness, and selfless commitment to providing for those he loved.
One of his favorite pastimes was loved sitting on the back deck and smoking a good cigar.
A man of kind-hearted conviction, Bill was a member of Grace Works Church, living out his faith in ways both steady and sincere. Those who knew him will remember not only what he did, but how he did it: with generosity, an encouraging spirit, and a humor that made room for others to breathe a little easier. He was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Charles D. and Louise Martin Payne, and all his siblings: sisters, Emalyne Taylor, Jane Langley, Bobbie Langley, Judy Goodner, and his brother, Charles Payne.
He is survived by his devoted wife of over 72 years, Nina Gravitt Payne. Children Jane (Dan) Fulghum, Jean Payne, William Payne Jr., and Traci Payne. Grandchildren Ashleigh (David) Kent, Shelli Payne, and Amanda Payne and five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to Gina, a special friend and extended family member, for her care and support of Bill.
A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held graveside in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Tuesday June 9, 2026, at 2:00 pm, with special friend and pastor Dr. Bill Owens officiating.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Williams, Briggs Nealon, Michael Williams, Brandon Day, Robbie Taylor, and Pat Goza.
