Alfred Hemmes passed away peacefully on June 28, 2018. He was born Alfred Casper Hemmes on December 26, 1931 to his parents: Adrian and Alma Hemmes in Twin Brooks, SD. He is proceeded in death by his son: John Paul Hemmes, his wives Betty Jo Hemmes and Peggy Sue Box. He is survived by his children: Diana Hemmes, Kathy Hemmes, Ruth Simmonds (and husband Jerry), Valarie Marchbanks (and husband Ronald), Randy Box (and wife Frances), Tracy Box (and wife Tracy), Twyla Painter (and husband Blaine), and Shelley Hughes. He had nineteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren with numerous nieces and nephews; Sister, Lorraine Arman. As a young child, the family moved to Harbor Springs, Michigan, where he grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Harbor Springs High School in 1949. He joined the United States Air Force on February 14, 1950. He served proudly in the Korean War and was honorably discharged on February 18, 1954. He made his home in Houston, Texas, where he and Betty raised their family. They owned and operated Hemmes Automatic Transmission for thirty-three years, where he took great pride in his work. He was respected in the industry and proud to have an ASE certified shop. He was an avid hunter, who was a proud member of the NRA. He built airboats and enjoyed hunting with his dogs. When he retired, he moved to Covington, Texas, with his second wife Peggy. He loved helping on the ranch and tinkering in his work sheds. They lived a quiet life, enjoying travel and seeing the country. He remained a long-time member of Park Place Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. Visitation will be on Friday, July 6th from 5-8 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7th at 2:00 PM in the Grand Chapel of Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
