A native-born Texan, Mike was born in Houston, Texas, on February 25, 1940, to Andrew Michael Gardner Sr. and Wanda Faye (Cox) Gardner. He was the oldest of six boys and remained devoted to his family throughout his life.
Mike graduated from Galena Park High School in 1958, attended San Jacinto Junior College during its inaugural year, and completed his Pipefitter apprenticeship through Local 211.
During the July 3–5, 1961 celebration at Garner State Park, Mike met the love of his life, Ruth Ann Whitsitt. They were married on December 27, 1963 while Mike was home on leave from Fort Carson, Colorado.
Mike proudly served in the United States Army. Stationed at Camp Casey in Korea, he served as a marksmanship instructor and earned a field promotion for his leadership and exceptional marksmanship.
Following his military service, Mike enjoyed a distinguished 33-year career with Ethyl Corporation before retiring on December 31, 1997.
Known affectionately as "Iron Mike," he was respected not only for his physical strength but also for his integrity, character, and willingness to help others.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty years, Ruth Ann (Whitsitt) Gardner; his parents; and his brothers Daniel Reese Gardner, Jimbo Gardner, Billy Gardner, and Kenneth Gardner.
