Although not necessarily happy with her circumstances, she demonstrated her strong faith by accepting her situation knowing that it was God’s will for her journey on earth.
Anne Marie was the 4th of 5 children born to Jan Emile Victor Alexander Slors and Christine t’Hooft. All of her immediate family preceded her in death. Due to her father’s job, Anne Marie had unique opportunities to travel. She lived her early years in Indonesia but her parents sent her and her brother Peter back to Holland just prior to the outbreak of World War II to live with her grandparents. She was only a teenager while living in Occupied Holland. She and her brother were active in the resistance and shared stories of those times with her family. Her mother and father were both imprisoned in Japanese Concentration Camps in Indonesia. Her father did not survive the experience but Anne Marie said that her mother’s attitude coming out of the camps inspired and shaped her as a person. Anne Marie also said those experiences, while difficult, provided important life lessons that greatly influenced her.
As a teenager in Holland, she studied literature while enrolled in a school that would be a United States equivalent of a college preparatory school. She learned several languages and used those skills throughout her life. Anne Marie also wanted to study Landscape Architecture but ended up going into Nursing and also studied midwifery. She wanted to experience different living in different parts of Europe and accepted a job working as a governess by day and translator for parties by night. Her desire to experience new things did not stop there and she decided to come to the United States at Ohio State where she worked and studied to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in the US. Anne Marie had to return to The Netherlands to help care for her mother, but returned to the US in 1955 eventually ending up in Texas working at UTMB Galveston then moving to Hermann Hospital in Houston.
While working in Houston, she met a widower with 2 young boys. After a six month courtship, she married Frank La More on Friday, March 18, 1960. She adopted Frank’s children Andy and Bruce then gave birth to Christine in 1961 and Albert in 1962. She continued to work as a nurse on the weekends and caring for her family during the week.
Anne Marie had many hobbies including gardening, cooking, reading, knitting, cross-stitch, sewing, and crocheting. Anne Marie took great pride in preparing her home for family gatherings as well as elaborate cookies made for the children’s Christmas and Valentines school parties. She would bake birthday cakes for all of her family. As far has her hand work, all of her children have some of her handiwork in their homes with one of the favorite projects being Christmas stockings made for each child, their spouses and children.
Last but not least, Anne Marie and Frank were both involved in several activities at church and were depended upon opening and preparing the church for various functions. Anne Marie was also involved in bible studies as Frank’s editor and assistant.
Services for Anne Marie La More were held on Friday, April 12, 2013.
