Annie Garcia Esparza was born on March 10, 1927, in Kingsville, Texas, to Carmen and Juan Garcia. She lived a blessed and full life for 98 years. Annie was one of seven children—preceded in death by her brothers Thomas, Gilbert, Joe, and Alfred, and survived by her sister Esperanza and brother Richard.
She married Cruz Esparza, Sr., and together they raised six children: Yolanda, Dolores, Cruz Jr., Joel, Rachel (Jesse Guillermo Diaz, her son-in-law de oro), and Jesse (Beatrice Esparza, her daughter-in-law). Annie was the proud matriarch of a growing family that included beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.
Affectionately known as “Pretty,” Annie was full of life and carried an infectious smile that could light up any room. She loved God deeply and was a devoted Christian, saved and assured of her eternal home in heaven. She believed wholeheartedly in the promise of salvation—that whoever confesses their sins and calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
Annie was a woman ahead of her time—smarter than most, industrious, witty, hard-working, and fun-loving. She enjoyed playing dominoes and cards even beating her daughter, Yolanda, a few weeks ago. She had a passion for music, dancing, and singing, loved flowers, especially red roses, and always cared for birds and stray animals. Her favorite color was red, a color known for love, strength, leadership, and prosperity. She was known for her giving heart, she never hesitated to help those less fortunate, especially by allowing them in her “black book”. Every job she held and sacrifice she made was for the betterment of her children. Annie was a prayer warrior, lifting her family daily by name, asking for God’s safety and protection over them.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the unconditional love she gave, the joy she brought, and the way she faithfully showed up for her family every single day.
In the words of one of her favorite singers, Freddy Fender:
"Roses are red, my love, violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet, my love, but not as sweet as you."
