Bernard (Bernie) Woodruff Phillips, 89, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2020 in Houston, Texas. Born in Holbrook, Pennsylvania on February 1, 1931, he was the son of William Nelson and Dorothy Woodruff Phillips. Bernie married the love of his life, Donna Jeanne Sykes on September 13, 1952. They made their home in Port Vue, PA and raised four children.
Bernie grew up on the family farm in Green County, PA. He started his work career at National Tube in McKeesport, PA. To support his family he worked nights and weekends as a manager of North Versailles Bowl for over 16 years. He later became Chief Auditor of Allegheny County, PA. then Auditor for Harris County, TX. Later in life he was self-employed as a courier in Houston until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Elks Lodge and Kiwanis Club in McKeesport, PA. He enjoyed playing golf throughout his life. He was a faithful member of Northwoods Presbyterian Church.
Bernie is preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Dorothy Phillips, five brothers, Harold, Wilbur, Eugene, Robert and Sherman Phillips, wife of 64 years, Donna Jeanne (Sykes) Phillips and daughter, Pamela Harris. He is survived by sons, Gary of Tyler, TX; Jeff (Deborah) of Hutto, TX; and Doug (Carol) of Dripping Springs, TX; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be sons, Gary, Jeff and Doug Phillips, Great Grandsons Victor and Joel Valdes, and Jesus Valdes. Honorary pallbearer is his dear friend, Harry Yates.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 28 from 6 to 8 PM at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 29 at 10 AM with internment at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.
