Bernice Wichmann was born in Simonton, Texas on Thursday, the 25th of December 1919 and was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, the 6th of August 2016 at the age of 96. She was a Christmas baby. Her parents said that they woke up to discover their special present hanging from the Christmas tree.
Bernice "Grannie" was the matriarch of our family. She was also the Grannie to all that knew her. She will most be remembered for her giving of unconditional love.
Left to cherish Bernice's' memory is her daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" Mae Meekes; grandchildren, Truitt Meekes Jr., Belinda "Bubba" Halliburton, Ricky Meekes, Donna "Susie" Rumsey, Ray Halliburton Jr., and Randy Meekes. She is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Annie Carolina Hilton; husband, John Herbert Wichmann; sons, Raymond Rolin Halliburton, Terry Halliburton and George W. Needham; brothers, Lee Hilton, Oliver Hilton, and by sisters, Mae Noonan and Jewell Hilton.
Bernice was full of life and took great joy in being surrounded by her family and friends. One of the many things that will be missed is her cooking; waking up to her hot cakes or ending a Friday with homemade hamburgers and ice cream for dessert while watching Bonanza. She was a hard worker that loved living on her property taking care of her many animals such as cattle, horses, pigs, goats, chickens, dogs, cats and many others. There was nothing that she could not do around the property from building barns to repairing anything that needed fixing. She enjoyed many hobbies from crafts to working in her wood shop.
Family and friends gathered to share memories of Bernice "Grannie" during a visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the 10th of August, at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, where a celebration of her life was held in the chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, the 11th of August, 2016. Reverend Matthew Hawkins officiated.
Immediately following the service, everyone met at Woodlawn Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine, also in Houston, 77055, where Reverend Hawkins lead the graveside service and interment.
