Bertila Melendez

Bertila Melendez was born on October 11, 1967, in Papalambre, El Salvador, to Fidel Rios and Concepcion Zelaya de Rios. One of 12 siblings—seven girls and five boys—she learned the value of hard work early in life, helping care for her siblings and selling cheese to support her family.

In 1983, she met the love of her life, Carlos Melendez, and together they began a beautiful journey of partnership. In 1984, they migrated to the United States in search of a better life, eventually settling in Houston, Texas, where they raised four children: Cindy, Ana, Carlos Jr., and Erica.

Bertila was strong, generous, and deeply faithful. Her love language was service—always cooking, helping, and welcoming others with warmth and grace. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her unwavering faith in God guided every step she took, and she found joy in caring for her family and serving those around her.

Her 42-year marriage to Carlos was a true example of love, commitment, and partnership. Bertila leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, strength, and love that will live on through her family and all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Carlos Melendez, and her four children (Cindy, Ana, Carlos Jr., and Erica); her five grandchildren (Devin, Noel, Damian, Nathan, and Julissa); and her great-grandchild, Jace.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Fue esposa devota, madre amorosa, abuela y bisabuela entregada. Su fe inquebrantable en Dios guió cada paso de su vida, y encontraba gozo en cuidar a su familia y servir a los demás.
