Carla Dianne Foster Sedan, age 78, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019, under Hospice Care, Grace Care Center at Northpointe, Tomball, Texas. Carla was born on October 9, 1940, in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, to Thomas James Foster and Kathleen Quinn Foster. Thomas, an American citizen, was an engineer working for the Hudson Bay Mining Company, where he met and married Kathleen a Canadian citizen, in the small mining town of Flin Flon, in 1934. Just prior to the outbreak of World War II, Thomas moved Kathleen and Carla back to his home town, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he began working for U. S. Steel. At the time of their return to the United States Thomas and Kathleen declared Carla’s citizenship as U. S., by birth, as allowed by the law at that time.
Carla’s early years were spent in various Western Pennsylvania. mining towns until the family moved to Birmingham, Michigan, when she was 12 years old. She attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1962 with a BA in Elementary Education. While at Michigan State she was an active member of Phi Mu Fraternity and served as Chapter Vice President. During her senior year she met her husband Harry. They were married in 1964, at the First Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Michigan, and she has remained his loving wife for the past 54 years.
After graduation from Michigan State University she took a teaching position in Kentwood School District, Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she taught 1st grade. In 1964, she and Harry moved to Lombard, Illinois, where she took a teaching position at Glen Ellyn, Illinois, teaching 1st grade. She remained at Glen Ellyn, teaching, until the birth of their first daughter, at which time she became a full time Mom, a responsibility she really loved.
After her daughters were beginning to grow up she became interested in knitting. In the beginning she was self-taught, but as time progressed she began taking formal knitting lessons from professionals and earned certifications in Advanced Knitting, ultimately receiving her nationally recognized Teaching Certifications from the American Professional Needlework Retailers Association (APNR). Her passion for knitting led to her and Harry opening a full service knitting store (The Needleworks) in Fairfax, Virginia. Carla taught knitting, crochet and needlepoint. Once in Houston she continued her love for knitting, being a long time member of the Knit-At Night knitting Guild, Houston, Texas and The Knitting Guild Association, an international knitter’s guild.
In her retirement years Carla has stayed active enjoying her Curves exercise group and bowling in a senior’s league (with her husband). Her most rewarding retirement activity was belonging to the Prayerful Stitchers Ministry, at Windwood Presbyterian Church, where she and many friends make prayer shawls for those in need. Carla has been a member of Windwood Presbyterian Church for 34 years.
Carla and Harry loved to travel enjoying the sights and histories of the United States, Canada and Europe.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Kathleen Foster. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Harry, and her daughters Barbara Sedan of Grand Prairie, Texas and Cynthia Sedan-Couch (David) of Bedford, Texas.
