Cathie was the oldest of six children born to Jimmy and Isabel Bishop on December 6, 1938, in Houston, Texas. She was proud to be a native Houstonian and graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1957. In 1958, she married Bob T. Bond of Magnolia, Mississippi, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Together, they became a strong and loving influence in the lives of their four children—Sandy, Lisa, Mark, and Scott—and, later, their nine grandchildren.
Cathie and Bob both came from large families, and they truly came to love each other’s families as their own. Cathie introduced our dad to life and opportunities in the city, while Bob introduced our mom to Grandma Bond’s 100-year-old house and the adventures of the Bond Dairy Farm in Mississippi!
Lunch at Grandma Bishop’s in Houston after church every Sunday and frequent road trips to see our grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and cows in Mississippi helped cement a deep gratitude for God’s gift of faith and family; a gift that is now being passed down to Cathie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After several decades of being a dedicated mother to us and caring faithfully for her father, mother, and brother, Cathie joined Bob in 1981 as he left his successful career to launch a new business, United Check Control. The early years were challenging, but through their perseverance and the addition of other family members, the business grew into something much bigger than they ever imagined. Cathie loved and valued every team member who helped make that success possible.
Cathie’s four children and their spouses would want you to know that the greatest blessing we received as a family was the ability to care for our mother, her home, and her pets over the last seven years since our dad passed. The days and nights spent with mom whether it was at home, the hospital, or Avanti, enabled the us to spend time with each other as siblings while also enjoying private time with her. This time was a treasured gift to our families.
What Cathie’s grandchildren, now ranging in age from 30 to 40, would share with you is how special their grandmother made each one of them feel—valued and unique, as if each were her favorite.
Grandma was never too busy for them when they popped into her home unannounced, and their friends were always welcome, too. She kept their favorite snacks and drinks on hand and encouraged their creativity and curiosity in ways only a grandparent can.
She always made time for them, whether it was sitting together on the two love seats in the front room; listening to stories about their day; taking a road trip to Virginia to see Allyson and Valerie; or making the short drive to a dance performance or school event. For as long as they were physically able to travel, Grandma and Grandpa were there.
They will remember Grandma’s unmistakable “BOB!”— called across the room, across the house, or even from the passenger seat of the car. It was one of those little things that was uniquely Grandma.
Cathie’s great-grandchildren, ranging in age from 1 to 17, would want you to know how much she loved her dog, Gracie, her cat, Lucy, and the many squirrels, birds, and raccoons that visited her yard.
Cathie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob T. Bond; her parents, Jimmy Bishop Sr. and Isabel Bishop; her brothers, Jim Bishop II and John Bishop; her nephew, Glen Bishop; and her great-granddaughter, Payton Layman.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory, including her children and their spouses: Sandy and Scott Schultz, Lisa and Mike Robbins, Mark and Debra Bond, and James Scott Bond. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses: Angela and Tommy Mattix, Mike Schultz, Allyson Bond, Valerie Bond, Kathryn and Chad Darneal, Kelly and Dillon Layman, James Travis and Amy Bond, Samantha and Nathan Barnes, and Becca and Clayton Bozyk; as well as her great-grandchildren: Bridget, Colleen, Kate, Jacob, Grayson, Steele, Ty, Blayke, Bria, Case, Annie, and Willow.
Cathie is also survived by her sisters, Pat Wood, Helen Hughlett, and Debbie Taylor and her husband, Mark; her beloved sisters-in-law, Inez Bond and Beverly Bond; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
We would like to thank the team at Avanti Senior Living in Towne Lake and the personalized caregiving team from ASG: Ada, Cierra, Faith, Katie, Sharon, Siya, Tatenda, and Tyeler. And finally, our thanks to Charles, Lucy, Raymond, and Sylvia. Each of you brought joy and comfort to our mom in the last year of her life and gave us peace in the moments we weren’t there.
