

Clyde was born in Robstown, TX to Clyde Culberson and Velma Oxford Mayo on February 2, 1940. He graduated from Sinton High School as valedictorian in 1957. He earned two bachelor’s degrees, one from Rice University in 1961 in History, and another from the University of Houston (UH) in 1964 in Psychology. He received a MS in Clinical Psychology from Trinity University in 1966, and a PhD degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from UH in 1972. A licensed PhD Psychologist, he was a principle at LWFW Management Consulting Firm until 1981 when he founded his own business, Management and Personnel Systems. He met Jeanne McCain in Houston and they were married in 1963.
At Rice, Clyde received the E. Merle Smith scholarship award. As a member of the Rice Methodist Student Movement, he was active in the Civil Rights Movement.
He was an active member of the Rice University Alumni Association, and the Westbury United Methodist Church Striver’s Sunday school class. He served on the boards of the Foundation for Contemporary Theology and the Houston Area Industrial/Organizational Psychology Association. Clyde mentored students over the years through the Student Counseling Program at Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Rice. He recently authored a book summarizing his career, "Cases and Views of a Practitioner in Industrial/Organizational Psychology".
Clyde is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanne Mayo; his son, Brady Mayo; his daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Jeff Mollhagen; brother, David Mayo; sister and brother-in-law-, Judy Mayo and Sid Aaron; and his six grandchildren, Lane, Justin, Ty, and Landry Mayo; and Aidan and Lydia Mollhagen. Also mourning his loss are his Standard Poodle, Sonny, and Ragdoll cat, Kenny, both of whom seldom left his side.
Clyde also served on the board of the Meyerland Club, and coached Little League Baseball and Softball. He and Jeanne loved to travel and to study the history of countries around the world. They were avid fans of the movies, as well as music, especially the “Blues”. Clyde played the guitar and loved to sing. Two of his favorite pastimes were camping and canoeing with his kids and grandkids. He taught them all about the stars and served as an encyclopedia for history, languages, science and math. He enjoyed studying and teaching religion.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, March 18, 2017 at Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willowbend Blvd, Houston. A meal will follow at the church. Funeral arrangements are provided by Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Foundation for the Contemporary Theology at 4027 Larkin Ln, Houston, 77025 or to the Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willowbend Blvd, Houston, 77096.
Clyde’s family wishes to thank caregiver, Shirley as well as Royce, Christina, Robert, and Donnica, of Memorial Hermann Hospice for their loving care.
