OBITUARY

Cordell Hull MCDONALD

May 14, 1942May 15, 2020

Cordell Hull McDonald was born to William D. and Sophia J. McDonald on May 14, 1942 in Chappell Hill, TX. Cordell professed the love of Christ at an early age and united with Sauney Chapel A.M.E. Church where he sang in the Junior Choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent. He served as a delegate to the A.M.E. Annual Conference. He graduated from Pickard High School in Brenham, Texas in 1960 and moved to Houston, Texas. After serving in the United States Army, Cordell returned to Houston, Texas and united with Jones Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. His zeal for service in God’s Army led him to serve as a Steward, Layman, Finance Committee Member, and Minister of Music at Jones Chapel, while simultaneously assisting at St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Needville, Texas. During one session of the Texas Conference of the A.M.E. Church, he was honored to serve as the Mass Choir Director of Jones Chapel A.M.E. Church. Cordell also directed the choir at the Shamrock Hotel during the National Bishops Council held in Houston, Texas. Due to his infallible desire for perfection, he kept the Gospel Chorus in rehearsal for seven hours on one occasion. Cordell united with Gethsemane Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Hayward Wiggins. He served faithfully for twenty-two years under the leadership of Rev. Dennis Carl Jones. Cordell was a part of everything and anything he could do to advance the kingdom of the Lord. He served as an Assistant Sunday School Teacher, worked in the Children’s Church, assisted with the Angel Choir, sang with the Voices of Glory and the Men of Praise, Culinary Ministry Assistant, Master’s Men Ministry, and he was a part of the Season Saints Ministry. Cordell served as an instructor for five years in the Children’s Division (ages 9-11) of the National Baptist Convention of America International Inc. Dr. Samuel Tolbert, President and Dr. T. Grant-Malone Director NBCA National Youth & Children’s Ministry. Cordell’s love for God manifested itself in his spirit of mission, compassion, and faithfulness which knew no boundaries. Likewise, his sense of humor was phenomenal and came as quickly as his reprimand when he sensed injustice. He was employed at the United States Postal Service in excess of thirty years. His various positions were: Mail Handler, Maintenance Support Clerk, and Acting Energy Coordinator. Cordell departed this life on Friday, May 15, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sherman Ellis McDonald. Cordell leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Doris Chachere; brother, Larry McDonald; nieces, nephews, and many relatives and friends.

Mr. Mac worked with the kids in the Youth Ministry, there will never be another like him. He loved those kids in his own special way as much as they loved him. He took such good care of those kids, made sure they had money to put in their Offering envelopes on 2nd Sundays, kept up with their jackets, purses etc. His laugh, smile, awesome baking/cooking skills, his presence will be felt and he will be missed. Mac was well...he was Mac (ha-ha). Rest my friend...I know you are in that special section...and spend most of the day in time out. Lol. 💜

I didn’t know Mac real well, but he was always a kind and gentle man. He was so easy to talk to that sometimes I would share a short joke with him, just to make him laugh. Being church members, I feel blessed and honored that God allowed him to cross my path on our journey to our spiritual growth. RIP my friend and I’ll keep striving to meet you again.
