Craig Martin Whitfield (ne Sandlin) died peacefully in his sleep December 11, 2021. Those who knew him appreciated his playfulness, curiosity, and sense of adventure. Rather a peripatetic soul, Mr. Whitfield’s primary vocation centered on travel—planning, going, and returning. He visited more than forty countries and most states in these United States. Asia was his preferred continent, but his sense of wanderlust took him north, south, east, and west.
Mr. Whitfield was born January 31, 1960 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His family relocated to Houston while he was still a preschooler. He graduated from Dickinson High School (1978) and the University of Houston-Clear Lake (1988). Most of his professional life was spent in building and grounds management/ supervision at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Houston. He retired in 2018.
Among his survivors are Dawn Sandlin (sister, Houston), Larry Thornton and Deb Whistler (brother and sister-in-law, Louisville), Christofer Sandlin (nephew, Kansas City, Missouri), Paul McDaniel (uncle, Muncie, Indiana), Melody McDaniel Scoble (cousin, Muncie, Indiana), Melise McDaniel (cousin, Muncie, Indiana), and Kate Thornton Garrity (niece, Seymour, Indiana). His birth parents were Barbara and Victor Sandlin. On any list of survivors, Mr. Whitfield would also name Tzu-Hao Peter Yeh and Janet Haddick Lira (of Houston and Santa Fe, Texas).
Later this month, Mr. Whitfield’s friends and relations will gather in his home to share their memories and say their goodbyes in a celebration of his life.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ForestParkLawndaleFH.com for the Whitfield family.
