He was born in Houston, Texas to Paul and Dorothy Gudgell on June 6,1947. He graduated from Sam Rayburn High School before studying chemistry at the University of Houston. As a chemist he worked and retired from ISP (International Specialty Products, Inc.) located in Texas City.
As a child he enjoyed traveling with his parents and brother Wallis to visit his aunts, uncles, and cousins in Kentucky. A fond memory of his is that his Granny Seelhurst taught him how to braid hair. Many might not know this, but he often braided her hair when he would visit. His children, Casey and Shelby, have several fond memories of their dad, including teaching them to water ski on Lake Travis, working alongside Casey on his Mustangs in the garage, and teaching Shelby how to braid her horse’s mane and tail. Casey and Shelby loved their rafting trips down the Guadalupe river with their dad, uncle Wallis, and cousins. Also, a big family trip to Walt Disney World as kids was very memorable, but it was made even better when everyone returned to Disney as adults with their spouses.
One thing people will remember about Dennis was his sweet tooth. He couldn’t wait to enjoy a slice of his mother’s famous chocolate pie or get a jar of her homemade fudge.
Dennis was known as “Paw” to his grandchildren, Corbin Wade and Sydney Jo, whom he loved very much. He treasured their visits and enjoyed hearing about their swim meets, bike races, and water polo matches.
Dennis was preceded in death by his grandparents Wallace & Rebecca Gudgell, Leroy & Gertrude Seelhurst, and his father Paul.
He is survived by his mother Dorothy, brother Wallis (wife Susan), son Casey (wife Amanda), daughter Shelby (husband Michael), grandchildren Corbin and Sydney, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Rest in peace, Dennis. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved you.
