Diane Sharon Briggs was born in Galveston, Texas, on December 5, 1950, and passed away at the age of 73 on November 20, 2024, at her home in Houston, Texas. Diane – who was also lovingly referred to as Didi – was the beloved daughter of George Buford Briggs and Mary Louise Locke Briggs, and she had a younger brother, Randy K. Briggs. She was preceded in death by both parents and her brother.
Diane was proud to be descended from early settlers of Galveston, Texas, on her father's side and, on her mother's side, of early settlers of communities in the East Texas counties of Trinity, Angelina and Polk, including Camp Ruby and Skinner Town (now part of Corrigan) in Polk County. Diane moved with her family to Houston when she was four where she would live for the remainder of her life, but, over those many years, she always loved spending time in Galveston and East Texas with family.
Diane attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston where she was in the Flag Corp of the Scottish Brigade, the school’s renowned drill team. She then attended college at The University of Houston, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Medical Technology. Following graduation, Diane worked more than 45 years for Memorial Hermann Health Center in the microbiology department before retiring in December of 2015.
Diane was a passionate needleworker, proficient in quilting, needlepointing, embroidery, cross-stitching and crocheting. She leaves behind many close friends in the needlework community with whom she spent countless hours and numerous vacations creating beautiful works of needle art as well as a lifetime of wonderful memories. She served on the Lone Star chapter of The American Needlepoint Guild for several years and was a member of the Houston Embroiderers’ Guild.
Diane also loved art and antiques and was a member of both the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Galveston Historical Society. Diane’s time spent with family in Galveston instilled in her a passion for the many historical homes in the area and she enjoyed attending estate sales there and elsewhere. Her family and friends also knew how deeply she loved her feline friends, and that she provided a loving home for many throughout her life, including Missy and Momma Cat who miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents and brother, Diane was preceded in death by her grandparents on both sides and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her Aunt Dorothy Locke, first cousins Frances Rosenberg Sorrow, Lyndon Rosenberg, Steve Locke, Sheryl Locke Harvey, Tim Locke and wife, Sherri, and Dana Locke Rosario and husband, Angel, as well as numerous second cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, Texas, 77023. A brief graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
