

Diane Wind Wardell, PhD, RN, AHN-BC was a holistic nurse and retired Professor Emerita from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Cizik School of Nursing. She began her career in nursing in pediatric in-patient care, then labor and delivery, then teaching OB/GYN in a diploma school of nursing in western Pennsylvania, and teaching at Greenville College in the BSN program. She moved to Houston in 1985 where she taught at Houston Baptist University for a short time before teaching at UT Health Houston in the master’s program in Women’s Health Care (WHC). She served as Director of the WHC program and maintained a patient centered practice at various sites in obstetrical/gynecological care including adolescent care at a high school in the 5th Ward and The Women’s Home. She was an inventor who, together with a colleague, developed a pacifier for premature infants. She also had a Healing Touch practice at the university.
She was an active member in nursing organizations including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as well as being a Research Director for the American Holistic Nurses Association. She served on the Council for Healing and is a past-President and a past-Chair of Certification for Healing Touch International, Inc (now Healing Beyond Borders). She studied extensively with Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, the founder of Healing Touch International, Inc and is the author of three books about Healing Touch. She has presented and taught courses in Healing Touch around the world. She has conducted research in the field of energy medicine and is a nationally recognized expert in this area.
She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, William Wardell, who gave her the support and freedom necessary to always reach for her dreams. Her children are Tristan Wardell, a gentle man and program analyst for a credit union; Colleen Grable, an amazing talented woman and human resources professional for an energy company; and Evan Wardell, a creative man and systems analyst for a community college. Her greatest joy was being the proud grandmother of Kalin Wardell (age 19), Denon Wardell (age 18), Tyler Grable (age 16), Cadence Wardell (age 16), Caleb Grable (age 15), Taylor Wardell (age 13), Attalie Wardell (age 13) and two step-grandchildren Austin Smith (age 12) and Samuel Smith (age 10). She loved nature and climbed mountains, swam in the sea with dolphins and learned from rocks and stones.
A memorial service will be held at Heights Funeral Home, located at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008, on August 1, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
