On Thursday, February 23, 2023, Donald Lewis Currans, loving husband, father, grandfather, and devoted man of Christ went to be with the Lord at the age of 76. At age 39 Don became a Christian, accepting the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart and forever dedicating his life to evangelizing God’s word and ministering the good news of Jesus Christ. In God and his son Jesus Christ, Don found his passion and his purpose!
Don was born on August 26, 1946, in Corpus Christi, Texas to Felix Anthony and Esther Grace Hall Currans. He had a traditional childhood of playing sports and tag-football in the Texas heat. During his high school years, he and his best friend Rick would terrorize the streets of Corpus in Don’s car. After high school Don enlisted in the Air Force in 1965 along with Rick, joining together on the “buddy system”. However, the buddy system didn’t last long as Don was transferred to a separate unit for basic training at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio. The Air Force trained Don in rocket electronics and although the training demanded a lot, Don excelled! During his time on active-duty Don would serve in Florida and Nevada before being honorably discharged from active duty in 1968. He would continue his military service in the U.S. Air Force reserves until 1971 and obtain the rank of Sergeant.
After Don’s military career concluded he returned to Corpus Christi and enrolled in Del Mar Junior College. He attended Del Mar for a couple of years before transferring to the University of Houston where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, he went to work for a company that would later be acquired by Schlumberger where Don would continue his professional career. At Schlumberger Don successfully operated as a field manager and got to travel the world extensively, working on several offshore platforms among other high-profile projects. He lived in multiple countries around the world, leading several projects in India, China, Scotland, Spain, Indonesia, and France. However, it was in Dallas, Texas where Don came to know Jesus, a pivotal moment that would forever change his life. It was there that Don would be saved by the love and grace of God, that he would come to know his son Jesus Christ.
Don would eventually return to Houston, Texas in 2000 where he would permanently reside, retiring from Schlumberger in 2003. In 2001 he married the love of his life, Sharon, and they would spend 21 beautiful years together growing in their faith and dedicating their time to their wonderful church, Bethel. Sharon and Don were true partners in life, rarely apart from the others side. They would often play golf together when the Texas weather permitted and went on many memorable vacations together. Studying scripture together though was their passion, starting each day glorifying God and ending their day the same way. This led both of them to give their time and biblical gifts to the church. At Bethel Don was a gifted leader, volunteering his services as Director of Counseling, and although a full-time paid position, Don refused salary! He led the church in marriage counseling training along with Sharon, bible fellowship, and positively impacted the lives of so many. He was a gifted teacher of Christ, providing so much depth and knowledge of scripture to his listeners. Don was often described as a gentle spirit who brought encouragement and a passionate energy of Jesus to his audience. Despite having a wealth of knowledge about scripture and God’s teachings, what made Don so unique was his ability to listen! He was such a great listener, exercising patience and understanding to those he counseled and to anyone needing prayer. Don loved all that came to him for guidance, with nurturing character and a relaxing demeanor, he had the ability to calm an anxious heart. Through Don you could see the love of God. He had the gift of disarming the enemy with biblical knowledge and truly walked by faith with ultimate trust in Christ. Don was a blessing to this world and saved so many through his discipleship. He truly was a child of God and lived his life fully to the glory of his son Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Currans; children Kimberlee Dawn Reed, Amy Currans, Steven Dadd and wife Jaime, and David Dadd and his wife Kimberlie; grandchildren Lawson Dadd, Peyton Dadd, Taylor Dadd, Gabriella Dadd and Kaitlyn Dadd; siblings Sue Davis, and Linda Hanna and husband Gary; nephew Kyle Nichols; and many more family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Bethel Church of Houston, 825 Bering Drive, Houston, Texas 77057, (713) 782-8948.
