Doris Austin-Pipkin was born on April 3, 1937 in Houston, TX to the late Mrs. T. Bertha Austin and Mr. Melvin Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tharner James Pipkin, her parents T. Bertha Austin and Melvin Austin, her sisters Kathryn Goode and Lillie Austin, her daughter Shelia Austin, and her great-grandson Wade Connerly. Doris was the eldest of four children.
Doris was a member of Booker T. Washington High School’s Class of 1955. Upon graduation, she enrolled at Texas Southern University. Doris began her professional career working in private homes where she cared for families. As part of her civic duty, she was a voting clerk and encouraged people in her community to register to vote. Doris worked at Foley’s and Macy’s for over 30 years and cherished the friends she made during that time.
Doris joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Robert L. Washington, Sr. on December 13, 1970. While at Macedonia, Doris was a member of Mission 2, and served as secretary. She also participated in the Women’s Chorus for Women’s Hour.
Doris was a mother of four children, a grandmother of eight, and a great-grandmother of three children. As the matriarch of the family, she always prioritized her family and made sure everyone was loved intentionally. Doris was an amazing cook, always cooking Sunday dinner for friends and family. Hers was the home for friends and family to gather to share love, food, and laughter. She had a natural gift to bring people together.
Doris leaves to cherish in her memory one sister, Wanda Addison. She leaves her children Dwight Austin (Lisa), Reginald Austin (Cassandra), and Kimberly Austin. Doris leaves her beloved step-daughters Pamela Thomas (Ray), Myrna King, Cecilia Garnett (Tony) and their families. She also leaves her beloved nephews James Goode (Crystal) and Brandon Addison; and her loving niece Kenetria Bennett (Aubrey). Doris also leaves her grandchildren Ashley Bennett (Chevy), Whitley Poullard, Amber Poullard, Tristan Poullard, Dwight Leander Austin, Robert Revels, III, Joshua Austin, and Aijah Reese. Additionally, she leaves her great-grandchildren Ashton Eldridge, Addison Eldridge, and Austin Bennett. Doris also leaves her great-nieces; Ariana Goode, Autumn Bennett, and Aubree Bennett. Doris also leaves her great-nephew, Cameron Goode. Loved by many, Doris also leaves behind a host of family and friends.
