Earl Alvin Keul, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to be with his Lord and Savior the evening of August 14, 2021. Earl was a dedicated Christian of the Baptist Faith, and was devoted to serving his Lord and Savior. Over the many years Earls dedication to his Lord and Savior was reflected in his reaching out to others and discussing with them if they knew Jesus. While we will never know, I am certain many of those he spoke with accepted Jesus. Earl was a faithful member of the Monument Baptist Church in Deer Park TX for many years.
Earl graduated from Milby high school with the class of 1943. Along with his studies, Earl played basketball for the Milby Buffs. Earl was in the Merchant Marines for 2 years after his graduation from Milby. He entered the Army in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the end of WW2. Most of his time with the Army was state side playing baseball. Earl also played softball with several of the churches he, mom and family attended over the years. Earl enjoyed fishing with his father, sons, and grandchildren as well as duck hunting with his sons and grandchildren. In Earls later years he continued fishing, hunting, gardening, and cooking. He could smoke a mean brisket.
Earl met the love of his life, Johnnie Deckard, soon to be Johnnie Keul. Earl in discussions with his sons, he shared how he met our mother. While in high school, Earls best friend was Jack Sellman. Jack was an excellent golfer while in school and in later life. One evening Jack called Earl to see if he wanted to go frog gigging with Jack and his better half Charley. Charley was his girlfriend and became his wife. Dad had met Johnnie Deckard recently and called her to see if she would like to go frog gigging with him, Jack, and Charley. Johnnie’s response was I will not go on a date with three men. After the first frog gigging date, Johnnie became best friends with Jack and Charley, and as Earl told it, that’s what hooked Johnnie along with his good looks. Johnnie and Earl were married on September 18, 1948 and had 52 years together before her death on April 5, 2001. Many fond memories of their time together.
Earl worked as a stereotype technician for the Houston Chronical. He also worked for the Houston Post for 4 years prior to returning to the Chronical. He retired as assistant manager in the Engraving Room after 32 years.
Earl was proceeded in death by his wife Johnnie L. Keul and his parents Otto A. Keul and Hazel Grace Keul.
