Edna Johnson Hicks was born August 17, 1933, the seventh of ten children, to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Johnson in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Mrs. Hicks attended elementary and high school in Natchitoches Parish, graduating in May 1951. Mrs. Hicks enrolled at Grambling College (LA) and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in May, 1955. She was blessed to begin her teaching career immediately after graduation in Natchitoches Parish as a Special Education teacher. In 1957, she relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana and continued her profession as an elementary school teacher. Unable to resist her beauty, Jimmie Hicks Jr., asked for her hand in marriage. They were wed in 1955. From this union came the greatest pride and joys of her life; daughters - Gisele "Diva", Terence "Queen" and son - Jimmie III "Masterpiece". Leading by example, Edna's children learned the blessings that came from reaching out to others in love and reconciliation. She taught them that love is indestructible and only increases by being shared. In 1970, Mrs. Hicks relocated again, to Houston, TX. Here, she was blessed with a change of career. She worked at the Port City Bank and remained there until her little son became old enough to understand that they were not rich and certainly did not own Port City Bank. Mrs. Hicks strongly advocated that we must put God first into our lives and be committed, dedicated, and flexible. Her commitment was to touch people's lives in a very positive way. Mrs. Hicks was a faithful and dedicated member of Community Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. It was in November 1976, that Mrs. Hicks returned to her passion for teaching and begun employment in the Houston Independent School District where she remained until her retirement. Even after her retirement, she was diligent in helping others to be successful by teaching five more years until 2002. On March 22, 1986, Mrs. Hicks proudly pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter. She is proceeded in death by her parents Benny & Zamer Johnson, husband Jimmie Hicks Jr., great grandson Jekey, sisters Morell Lewis, Willie Mae Dyas, and Hazel Sanders; and brother's, Bobby, Cleveland, James and Otis Johnson. Mrs. Hicks leaves a legacy of love and reconciliation to her beautiful children, Gisele, Terence and Jimmie Hicks III and his wife Sandra; step-daughter, Avery Dotie; step-son, Darryl Lynn Jones; her precious grandchildren, Lawaunyka, Kenneth II, Germani, Karla, Stephanie, Bryan, Jemetrence, Jemeka, and Tiffany; Samantha, Jessica, Isaiah; great-grand children, her sister Emma Cofield ; god-daughter, Nakisha Harris, and a serious flock of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
