Elaine W. Shumway passed away on July 9, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Petoskey, MI, in 1935 and graduated from high school in Charlevoix, MI, in 1952. After becoming a Registered Nurse, she moved to Houston where she met and married her husband John. Together they raised two children, enjoyed their careers in construction and health care, and traveled the world. Members of the Houston Safari Club, they hunted in Africa, Spain, Canada, and Alaska. Elaine loved to visit her family in northern Michigan and continued to explore the world after John’s death, including her dream trip to the Galapagos and Peru. She is survived by her children Helen (Robert) and Michael (Suzanne), her grandchildren Kate, Daniel, and Ian, as well as her sisters. A wonderful friend, Elaine loved her family, her gardening, and her work as a nurse anesthetist. A memorial service honoring Elaine's life will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Heights Funeral Home, with a reception to follow from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the The Arthritis Foundation in Elaine's memory.
