Elizabeth, more affectionately known as Baby Sis, spent her formative years in Houston’s Fifth Ward and she attended Atherton Elementary. The family then moved to Galena Manor and she attended Fidelity Manor. She was a proud graduate of Fidelity Manor High school where she enjoyed playing in the band, drama club and student council. Her fondest memories are when the band marched from the high school to Dement Field in Galena Park. After graduating from Fidelity Manor, Elizabeth continued her studies at Texas Southern University where she received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education.
While Elizabeth worked on her master’s, she met and married Othell Flynn Hancock. To this union, two beautiful daughters Nicole Elizabeth and Kimberly Diane became the center of their attention.
Elizabeth began her teaching career with the Houston Independent School District where she taught business courses at Sharpstown and Lee High School. After 35 years of teaching, she decided it was time to retire and devoted her time to her precious granddaughter, Kayla. She loved her girls, but there was nothing she would not do for Kayla!
Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her girls and Kayla whether it would be shopping, traveling, or eating at one of her favorite restaurants. She also loved the many outings and trips with the Royal Ruby Red Divas of the Red Hat Society, and Seasoned Saints Ministry.
St. Matthew Baptist Church was also her home where she was baptized and an active member. She faithfully served as a Youth Matron, teacher to the Women’s Sunday School Class, Kingdom Builders Ministry, Seasoned Saints Ministry, Vacation Bible School Director and volunteered with the Solid ROCK Summer Camp.
We will miss your smile and kind heart and your lovely sense of humor.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Othell Hancock.
Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Nicole Elizabeth Hancock (William Shaw), Kimberly Diane Hancock (Christopher Atkins); granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Atkins; two brothers, Oral O. McClennon, Jr. (Precious), Robert Woodie McClennon, Sr.; two Godchildren, Rewa Booher and William Jamel Booher, Sister-in-law: Ning Hancock, one niece, nephews, and a host of relatives.
