I'm so so sad to learn of eLiz's passing. There's so much good about her and her life. She lifted the lives of anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. 

She had a special talent to tell stories. No matter what she would tell about, she made it ridiculously funny. 

I am a better person, better coworker and better mom for knowing her. She was one of my first and favorite mom heroes. I still use Mable's Labels and still live by her mom rule: make your children think you're just a LITTLE bit crazy.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;     Ecclesiastes 3:4

I realize this is the time to weep and morn, but I want to take a moment to say what an amazing person Elizabeth Mask was.  I met Elizabeth when she was still Elizabeth Grimes.  My first impression is how genuine person she was.  She would say things out loud that I would be thinking.  I found that to be so refreshing in someone who was 11 years younger than me.  I have never met someone who felt more comfortable in her skin than Elizabeth.  I credit her Mom for making such a well-adjusted human being that dealt with the world so authentically.

When we moved to Oak Park she literally sat across from me and our friendship began in earnest.  We would go to lunch and work out together.  During these times, we would have the most open conversations about life, family, work.  I remember one conversation where we talked about growing up. See she was an only child and wished she had a sibling and I stated that I am the oldest with 5 younger sisters and a brother that she would not be who she was if she had more siblings.  I told her if she wanted an older sister consider me because I had such vast experience.  It has been a privilege to play that role for her.

When her an Jerry were deciding to have children, she asked me my thoughts being a single, childless person would not necessarily be the best person to ask.  I told her that she should have this conversation with Jerry, her husband.  She told me how much she loved just being a couple and that she had the most amazing life with him.  After several more uncomfortable questions, she asked me if I thought she would be a great Mom.  I told her I could not think of anyone better to be someones Mom.  So, Laura and Julia please know how much your Mom loved you.  

As I was working at Halliburton, I overheard John Barrett talking about his poker group.  I boldly asked if I could join.  He stated that girls were not allowed in his poker group.  So, I decided to start a girls only poker group.  Elizabeth, Cathy Young, Lisa Wilson, and Sandra Meraz were the first people to join me in this poker group.  Later Angela Elliot, Maricela Raider, and Carla Loe joined this group.  This group has sustained each other through having children, people moving away, brain and breast cancer, the death of Lisa from brain cancer, and loss of jobs.  Elizabeths final poker night was August 5th.  I think I can speak for the group we felt honored to have this final time with Elizabeth.  Her simple joy at eating spaghetti with us even amid facing her final days on earth sustain me now.  

So, I would like to share a story I found from Anne Lamott that sums up how we will finally reach our time to dance:

You will lose someone you cant live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesnt seal back up. And you come through. Its like having a broken leg that never heals perfectlythat still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.

Rest in Peace Elizabeth.  Much Love and Respect.  We will so miss you.


Elizabeth was one of the nicest, kindest, and strongest people I have ever known. She took on life's challenges with such dignity and grace, and all the while with such a positive attitude. She was always there to help others in their time of need. She was a true Christian person. May God grant her family the peace that passes all understanding, may He hold them in the palm of His hands, and may her family know that many, many people loved Elizabeth and are holding them up in prayer.

Liz was our cookie mom for our girl scout troop, as well as, her older daughter's troop. She tirelessly worked for our troops, her employer and her family. She was an amazing mother, woman and Christian. Her kind and giving heart will be remembered. She has planted the seed in her daughters. They will become great young women because of the values she embodied. She will be smiling down on them with pride.
