Elizabeth Wharton Robb, 93, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by loving family, on the evening of Jan. 8, 2013 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Mitchell Robb, Sr.; granddaughter, Abby Want Aughinbaugh; sister, Ruth Wharton Martin; sister, Genevieve Wharton Crowder; and brother, George Wharton. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Elizabeth Want and husband Johnny Want; daughter, Peggy Jean Nagle and husband Robert Nagle; son, Clarence Mitchell Robb, Jr. and wife Barbee Lane Transou; as well as six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, all of whom spent time with her over the last few months.
Elizabeth was born on December 22, 1919 in Houston and lived her entire life in what is now the historic Houston Heights area. Her life spanned the history of “The Heights” from when it was a streetcar suburb of Houston to its current gentrification. As a child she lived on Nicholson Street, attending Reagan High School and Baptist Temple Church. As a young woman she met and fell in love with her brother’s best friend, Clarence Robb. She waited for him to return from WWII and they married on May 4, 1946 at Heights Presbyterian Church. Clarence built their dream home nearby on Cortlandt Street where they raised their family and spent the rest of their lives. Elizabeth planted every tree, shrub and flower on the grounds. Her beautiful, thriving gardens are now a reminder of her life and her gentle, patient love of gardening. Up until her death the family still gathered at her home to celebrate holidays.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Hallmark Hospice and Patrick Robb for their incredible assistance with Elizabeth’s care. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, January 18, 2013, at 11 AM, at Heights Presbyterian Church, 240 West 18th Street, 77008. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heights Presbyterian Church.
