Ella Laird, a devoted wife, mother, Grannie and member of the greatest generation, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 18, 2011. She was nearly 92. She was dedicated to her family all of her life. Ella was a longtime member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church. She loved her Lord with all her heart. Because of her love of Christ, she was determined to share her faith with her family. Everyone who knew Ella knew her committed stance to live for Him.
Born Nov. 25, 1919, Ella married Edgar Boyce Laird on Aug. 22, 1939, and they lived happily for 59 years. Ella could not wait to see her handsome sailor, and now they are finally reunited along with her precious first born, Edgar Boyce Laird Jr., and her much-loved third son, Thomas Dee Laird. Ella is survived by her son Larry Wayne Laird and wife Rosemary, daughter-in-law Lesley Laird , and daughter Sandra Jo McGowan and husband Jimmy; her grandchildren, Larry Laird II and wife Myriam, Cheryl Laird and husband Greg Hassell, Laura Dietz and husband Daniel, Stephanie Tolson and husband Mike, Denise Lambert and husband Rick, Shannon Laird, Jennifer Chang and husband Jonathan, and Rachael Miller and husband William; her great grandchildren, Madison Lewis and Jude Dietz, Jackson and Jamie Hassell, Isla Laird, Wesley and Drew Tolson, Michael, Sara and Claire Ella Lambert, and Jade and Jonathan Chang; niece JoAnn Hayes, nephew Jerry Miller and many loved ones.
Ella was a woman who influenced many to strive for excellence. She embodied the scripture, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord.” She was strong, full of both can-do practicality and elegant style. She taught her family to think for themselves, love with fierce loyalty, and not to wear baggy clothes. Ella’s example will continue to teach all of us. She will be deeply missed.
