Ellen Rose Efsic entered into rest on March 4, 2025. She was born in Urbana, Illinois on January 2, 1963, to Dianne and Edward Efsic. The first of four children, she was raised in Columbus, Ohio. She attended Holy Name Catholic School and Columbus School for Girls, where she played for the basketball team. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from The Ohio State University in 1985.
She began her career in nonprofit fundraising at Columbus Museum of Art in 1986. A colleague introduced her to the love of her life, Scott Legg, in 1989. The couple moved to Houston, Texas in 1990 and wed in February 1991 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In August 1995, Ellen gave birth to her and Scott’s daughter, Clare Legg.
A flourishing career at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston and the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston led the family to Madison, Wisconsin and San Diego, California before returning to Houston in August 2002. An exceptionally gifted fundraiser, Ellen raised millions of dollars for the arts, housing, social services, and medical assistance.
Ellen created close relationships everywhere she went, connecting her friends with one another and cultivating strong communities of women. Finding beauty in life, she was passionate about the arts, literature, food, fashion, and gardening. In the 1990s, she was involved in the creation of Meredith Gardens at Mandell Park in Houston. Alongside her family, she enjoyed fostering and adopting pets.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Scott Legg; daughter, Clare Legg; parents, Dianne and Edward Efsic; and siblings Maria van Boekel, Edward Efsic III, and Matthew Efsic. Memorial contributions can be made to Houston Eye Associates Foundation, Meredith Gardens (Friends of Mandell Park), Houston Botanic Garden, and The Book Cycle.
