

Ellena Dickerson, a beloved matriarch, educator, and artist, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, at the age of 95. Born in Big Spring, Texas, on March 21, 1931, Ellena lived a full life defined by her devotion to family, a passion for learning, and a vibrant creative spirit.
After graduating from Hardin-Simmons University, Ellena spent her early professional life shaping young minds as a dedicated school teacher. Later, she poured her energy into the arts and her community. Always eager to develop new skills, she took up gardening, painting, and pottery, transforming her home into a beautiful reflection of her artistic eye. Her deep appreciation for the visual arts also led her to serve as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where she shared her passion and knowledge with countless visitors.
An adventurous spirit, Ellena loved to travel, exploring the world through numerous domestic and international journeys. Whether navigating a new foreign destination or discovering regional American beauty, she brought a sense of wonder and gratitude to every trip.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert H. Dickerson, and her sister, Linda Schmidt.
Ellena is survived by her three sons, Rob (Lori) Dickerson, Charles (Mary) Dickerson, and James (Amy) Dickerson; her sister, Olga Kristin Petersen; her grandchildren, Harper, Paulie, Ellena, Mary Catherine, Austin, and Lindsay Dickerson; and a large community of extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 2, 2026, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, with Dr. Bill Kerley officiating.
