Epifanio was born on April 7, 1932 to Lorenza Medina and Toribio Acevedo in Tierra Nueva, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He was the oldest of 5 children. He was born on his beloved ranch, Rancho San Francisco, but he was raised in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas. He was an extremely hard worker even as a child; since he was the oldest of the children, he was in charge of helping his dad on the ranch. He was unable to go to school because it was too expense and there was too much to be done. As he grew up it was his responsibility to cultivate the land, tend to the cattle, and do all the necessary tasks a ranch needs to operate.
At the age of 30 he went to California in search of providing a better life for his family. In California he was fruit picker where he worked for several years and then returned to San Luis where he stayed briefly to care for his children after he widowed. In 1970 he came to Houston, worked as a Maintenance man in an office building, met his co-worker’s sister and fell in love. Not only did they get married in 1974, but he also got a bonus son and had one more son in 1975. He was hired at the University of St. Thomas, to care for the property; he spent 27 years there. After he retired, he and his wife moved back to San Luis Potosi, Mexico to live out their later years. His passion was his ranch, Rancho de San Francisco, where he loved to tend to the fields and care for his cattle, that were more like pets than livestock. In 2018 he and his wife, Emilia, came back to Houston to care for their granddaughter’s puppy, Aspen, and they have stayed here ever since.
He was a stern man but had a heart of gold. He enjoyed life and loved his family. He would have a shot of tequila every day, had a sweet tooth, loved fruit, shrimp, Chinese Food, and scratch offs.
Epifanio is survived by his wife, Emilia, his children; Kika, Pedro and his wife Antonia; Sylvestre and his wife Leonor; Tino; Fili; Jose Nunez and his wife Josefina; and Ernesto and his wife Viviana; Brother Piedad and wife Concha; Sister Julia Garza; and countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
