

Esther Mae Johnson was born on June 3, 1932 in Clodine, Texas, the sixth child born to Isom and Curtis Johnson. She was given the name Esther by the family Pastor Rev Page. Over the years she was given many other names such as "Lady Lux", "Queen Esther", but the name well known by her New Hope Family is "Sweet Cake". Esther attended Richard Broch elementary and graduated from Booker T. Washington Jr-Sr High School in Houston, Texas. She received an Associate's degree from Houston Community College and Bachelors from University of Houston Central Campus. She retired from Houston ISD after 31 years of employment. She was the first to teach computer classes in elementary at FairChild Elementary. Esther accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1940 at the age of 8 under Rev. M.M Pierson and the New Hope Baptist Church. There she was a servant in many Capacities. She was the musician for the Sunday School, Junior Choir, and Gospel Choir, a member of M.M.Pierson club, President of the Pastors Aide and a member of the First Ward Activity Club. She remained a member of New Hope Baptist Church under Pastor Tracy S. Phillips until her demise. On April 10, 1955, Esther united in marriage with Thomas Edison Mason. To this union two sons were born Thomas E. Mason Jr, Welton M. Mason II and a beloved daughter Carolyn Mason Saunders. Esther is preceded in death by both her parents, husband Thomas E. Mason Sr., son Thomas E. Mason Jr., six sisters, and one brother. Her legacy continues through her daughter Carolyn, son Welton, five grandchildren Christopher, Jerrordrick, Decion, Thomas and Bria.
