

Evelyn E. Calderon, 89, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2012. An exceptional woman who touched the lives of all who knew her, Evelyn was born on March 7, 1923 in Bay City, Texas, to Florencio Espinoza and Maria Rodriguez Espinoza, both deceased. In 1929 her family moved to Houston, Texas where she attended Sam Houston High School. As a social worker for the United Way of Greater Houston for over 20 years, Evelyn devoted herself to helping those in need in the Houston community. For her compassion and commitment to community service, Evelyn received the prestigious Yellow Rose of Texas Governor’s award. One of ten children, Evelyn was the family matriarch, always ready to extend comfort and a helping hand. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Lucia Parks, of Monterey Park, CA; Ernesto Calderon, her husband of 72 years; two sons, Ernest L. Calderon and Reynaldo Calderon; daughters-in-law Delia and Delores; four grandchildren, Loran Cunningham, Ann Juneau, Kathryn Calderon, and Christopher Calderon; six great-grandchildren, Cole, Cameron, Gabrielle, Hailey, Courtney and Melanie; two great-great grandchildren, Hunter and Axe; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by four brothers, Florencio Espinoza, Jr., Israel Espinoza, O.B. Espinoza, and Samuel Espinoza, and four sisters, Helen Gomez, Olivia Moreno, Carolina Ramirez, and Soledad Aguilar. The family will receive friends at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Ave. from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, May 21st. A rosary is scheduled at 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held in the Main Chapel on Tuesday, May 22nd at 11:00 am and interment will follow at 12:00 pm. Charitable donations in her name may be made to The Shriners Hospital for Children.
