

Garfield Hughes was born in the shadow of the Roan Mountain in Buladean, NC on June 12, 1926 to the late Garfield and Dortha Hughes. While a child growing up he met the love of his life, Lila Ledford Hughes, whom he would marry in 1946.
After serving in the US Army Transportation Corp during both World War II and the Korean war, he and Lila eventually moved their young family of three boys to Houston, Texas. In 1956, while working for Sam Montgomery Oldsmobile, Garfield studied at the Rolls Royce Factory in Crewe, England for 6 months and returned later that year as Houston's first Rolls Royce Factory Master Mechanic. In 1970 he would decide to open his own Rolls Royce automotive shop, Hughes Motor Corp, where he would work with his sons until his retirement in 2002. There are several 1956 Rolls Royce Automobiles in the Houston area that have never been worked on by anyone other than Garfield or his sons.
He is preceded in death by this parents, Garfield and Dortha Hughes, his brothers, Homer & Clyde, and sister, Bernice Hughes, as well as his grandsons, Alan, Jr., Kenneth, Jr. and Neal.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70+ years, Lila, sons, Alan & wife, Diane, Kenneth & wife, Cyndi, and Mike, 3 grandchildren, Laura, Tarah and Gary, 10 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 7pm-9pm, on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home.
Funeral service will begin at 1pm, on Saturday, May 6, 2017, followed by interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
