Born in Houston on September 17, 1936, to Evelyn and George “Slim” Johnson, Sr., George grew up in the Heights. An avid horse rider early on, he kept his horses in a pasture behind 21st Street and was a member of the Junior Mounted Patrol.
After attending Reagan High School and taking some college courses, George enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for four years as a radioman on the USS Henrico. He had fond memories of traveling the seas to Hong Kong and Japan and kept up with many of his navy buddies over the years.
When he completed his military service, George began working as an electrical supplies salesman and was employed by Summers Electric and then Winn-Lange Electric before he retired. He was a natural salesman and customers became lifelong friends. There were countless fishing, hunting and golfing excursions where George would network his many friends together. Lots of cold beer and shots of tequila were likely involved along with some tall tales and other shenanigans.
George is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marsha. For more than 40 years, George and Marsha raised their family in Tanglewilde, worked hard and enjoyed spending their free time together. On weekends, they could be found sailing the waters of Clear Lake on their sailboat, the Shanalie, or tending to their Box 6 Ranch near Nixon, Texas.
He is survived by his daughter Julie Falcon (husband Bobby), stepson Ron Fash (wife Debbie), stepson Bob Fash (wife Kelly) and stepdaughter Christina Cupp (husband Marc). George also leaves behind six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and numerous cousins and other extended family members who he loved immensely.
When invited to events and family gatherings, he would inquire if the attire was “boots and spurs” or something more formal. No matter which way he dressed, he was always dapper and he loved being on a dance floor, two stepping the night away. Always affable, George loved being close to people and making every moment memorable for those around him. Everyone who met him has at least one “George” story.
Prior to his passing, he asked his family to make a contribution to Shriners Hospital for Children in his memory because his father served as a Shriner and this was a cause he regularly supported during his lifetime. The family has honored this wish and additional memorial gifts can be made at shrinerschildrens.org.
