

Gertrude Elsie Cavalier Thomas was the third child born to Walter B. and Etta J. Cavalier. She was born on July 5, 1921 in Houston, Texas. Gertrude attended Gregory Elementary and Booker T. Washington High School, graduating in 1939. She also attended Johnson Business School. She retired from the Harris County Clerk's office after twenty-five (25) years of service. Gertrude was joined in matrimony to William H. Thomas in 1943. From this union, they were blessed with two children, William H. and Walter C. Thomas. She was active in community affairs, having served as Den Mother to Cub Scout Pack 349, for over ten (10) years. She served as Precinct Judge in Precincts 209 and 501 for nine (9) years, while volunteering at Riverside Hospital. Gertrude became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church (MBC) under Pastor T. J. Goodall and was a Platinum Member servicing over fifty (50) years as a faithful member. She sang in the Celestial Choir under Mrs. Davis, the Mission Chorus (organized by Rev. Boone) under Mrs. Sykes, and the Antioch Choir. She was a participant in the Antioch Heritage Committee, Bereavement Committee, Golden Saints Ministry, Priscilla Circle Ministry and loved attending Sunday School. Gertrude was preceded in death by her father and mother (Walter and Etta Cavalier), her brother (Walter B. Cavalier), her sister (Mary Collins), her husband (William H. Thomas), and her grandson (James Merritt). Gertrude is survived by: Sons: William H. Thomas (Mary) and Walter C. Thomas (Rhonda); Grandchildren: Sonya Merritt, Colette Prudhumme, Zindia Thomas Pierson (John), and Shawna T. Thomas; Great-Grandchildren: LaTravia Bradshaw, Justin Pierson, and Alexandra Pierson; Great, Great-Grandchildren: Felippa Grover and Traviana Bradshaw; Niece: Ann Etta Carr; Grandnieces: Melba Carr, Yvette Hayes (Hampton Jr.), Connie Carr-Jones (Daryl); and Church family and friends.
