Gilbert Gomez Reyes, 97, of Houston, Texas, was born April 22, 1929, and died July 11, 2026. He lived a long life marked by steady work, deep faith, and a gift for keeping people smiling—often at just the right moment.
Gilbert served in the Texas National Guard for three years, then put in 35 years with Southern Pacific, followed by two years at an oil refinery—proof of a man who understood commitment, routine, and the quiet pride that comes from showing up and doing the job well. He was also involved with the Railroad Retirement Association, staying connected to the community of people and work that shaped so much of his life.
To those who knew him best, Gilbert was the kind of dad who didn’t wait to be asked—he simply helped. If someone was in need, he found a way to lend a hand. If something needed fixing, building, or figuring out, he brought patience, practical wisdom, and a gentle determination to the task. He took his responsibilities to heart and made sure his family was cared for, not just in the big ways, but in the everyday ones that truly last.
He enjoyed travel, gardening, raising chickens, and building things—interests that suited his adventurous spirit and hands-on nature. He also loved his western TV shows, and he was a true conversationalist, especially when the topic turned to growing up or the adventures of his life. And if you were lucky, you didn’t just hear a story—you got the version with the timing, the grin, and the punchline. Gilbert was a big joker, and his humor was never far away, even when life was busy or hard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Ramirez Reyes; his son, Albert Reyes; and his son in law, Kenneth Beene.
Gilbert is survived by his son, Gilbert Gene Reyes (Ursula Reyes); his daughter, Barbara Ann Reyes - Beene; his son, Roland Reyes; his granddaughter, Beth Farouse (Mike); his grandson, Charles Baker (Maria); his granddaughter, Maria Reyes; his grandson, Gilbert G Reyes III (Brandy); his granddaughter, Shannon Montealvo (Paul); his great- granddaughters, Briella Farouse and Sonya Baker; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters.
