On the afternoon of September 23, 2026, Gregory Andre Herring, 62, passed in his sleep in Webster, Texas. Greg was born on January 25, 1964, in Jacksonville, FL., on his maternal grandmother’s birthday. He was the son of the late Mr. Wesley G. and Dr. Doris Bowers Herring of Bascom, FL. Gregory was also preceded in death by his brother, Patrick D. Herring, his maternal grandparents, the late Rev. Andrew and Gertrude Bowers, Sr., of Bascom, and paternal grandparents, the late Wesley and Adele Herring of Jacksonville.
Gregory lived with his parents and brother in Jacksonville and Tampa, FL, Washington, D.C., Seat Pleasant, MD, and Bascom. He spent many summers in Bascom on his grandparents’ large farm with his thirty-seven first cousins and other relatives. For a brief time, he resided in Aviano, Italy, when his mother was an exchange librarian for the U. S. Government. Gregory was a 1982 graduate of Malone High School, Malone, FL. He attended Bauder College in Atlanta, GA on a scholarship for Fashion Design. Gregory worked as a salesman for General Electric in Atlanta and several companies in Florida.
He was a member of Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Bascom and Clear Creek Community Church in League City, Texas. He professed his strong faith in God early in his life and had many writings of his bible studies and beliefs.
Greg’s congenial and gregarious personality was infectious. He was a happy person, and his overall attitude was one of optimism. As a child, he would invent ways to have fun. He had a mischievous way of getting other cousins in trouble, while staying free and clear, always in good fun and good spirit. You could count on Gregory to provide a good time.
He had the kind of personality that would draw people to him. Greg’s smile, laughter, booming voice and deep passion for soulful style and “fly” taste were only exceeded by his quest and drive to secure what he felt was God’s plan for his life. Until the very end, he was optimistic while working to solve life’s difficulties with prayer, the family’s assistance, the help of friends and God’s grace. Even though his health was failing, he remained positive and cheerful. He had spoken to many of his first cousins during the week before his death.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a son, Jayden Thomas and mother, Candace Thomas of Panama City, FL; a nephew and niece, Dorian and Savannah Herring of Charlotte, North Carolina; three uncles: Horace C. Bowers and Dr. Mirion P. Bowers of Los Angeles, CA; Rev. Wallace Z. Bowers of Tampa, FL; aunt, Glynette Bowers Brown of Bascom; his Herring relatives and a supportive host of first cousins, relatives, friends and caregivers.
Special thanks to Frank Lopez of the Kidney Care Center and John Nally of Concord EMS, both of Clear Lake, TX.
Final arrangements in Marianna, FL are pending.
