Towards the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, he fled Vietnam and arrived in the United States. He married his wife, Nguyet, in 1976 after they met in the United States. A couple of years later they had their first son Henry and their second son Kim came a couple years after that. His educational background was in auto mechanics which brought him to work for the Houston ISD transportation department for 25 years until retiring in 2005 at the age of 76. He was multilingual speaking Vietnamese, English, and French. His hobbies included fishing and watching soccer. He loved playing with and spoiling his grandchildren, Sara and Sander, and they loved their grandfather. Hai passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 4, 2019.
