Hattie Gage

Hattie Holmes Gage, one of 10 siblings, was born on October 5, 1922, to Reverend Stephen and Elizabeth Barley Holmes in Pattison, Texas. While living there, she accepted Christ at an early age under the pastoral care of her father, who led several Methodist churches in Waller County. She was home-schooled and helped to raise some of her siblings while in Pattison, as Blacks were not allowed in public schools.

December 5, 1938, she entered a union with her loving and dear husband Mr. Eddie Lee Gage, Sr. and united by her father. In 1948, the Holmes family and the Gages relocated to Acres Homes in Houston, Texas. Shortly after, the Gages moved to the Deep West End, now known as The Heights and later named The Greater Heights. They joined fellowship with St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Patterson Street under the leadership of Reverend Joseph Cox. She held several positions in the church – United Methodist Women, Sunday-School Superintendent, Communion Steward, and choir member. Some would say she became known as an honorary “Faithful Prayer Warrior”. If you have ever heard her pray – you would hear this in her prayer – “Keep your little hand in God’s big hand”! That was a motto she not only prayed but lived by! She worked tirelessly for many years at Bell Products as a Supervisor. She worked for her very dear friend, Heidi Heard, and helped to raise Heidi’s son, Benjamin. Hattie also served as a member of the Star of Faith Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Society, serving the local community.

Hattie was a good cook and her staple was teacakes! She loved to host and rest assured, if there was ever a family function – she made sure to have some ready! One of her favorite pastimes was playing dominoes. Don’t think you could sit at that table and beat her. If you called 10, she got 15. She always kept score! You would not beat her if she had anything to do with it! She had a passion for fishing and would always be ready to go the “pond”! She loved her family and church family. Her favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23. She loved raising kids and just being a part of the children’s lives.

Her life changed March 22, 2013 – the passing of her better half, Mr. Eddie Lee Gage, Sr. They were in union for 75 years. Her life wasn’t the same. Her light was getting dimmer and finally extinguished August 27, 2026.

Her legacy lives on in the many lives of others that she touched. She leaves to cherish her memory:

• Sons and Daughters-in-Love - Eddie Jr. (Glenda), Freddie, Ray (Tina), and Philip (Shelia)

• Grandchildren – Lamar, Lamarcie, Karess, Nikki, Sherman Jr., Alonzo, Star, and (5) Great-Grandchildren

• Nieces, nephews, family, friends, sons and daughters that she raised – too many to name but never forgotten
