Helen Elizabeth Gordon was born on July 10, 1915 to Willie Haynes and Samantha E. Mack in Navasota, Texas. She was their second child. Helen was a graduate of Phillis Wheatley Senior High School in Houston, Texas. She was affectionately known as the "Pie Lady" and was a successful fundraiser for whatever cause she believed in. Helen was united in marriage to Vernon D. Gordon, Sr. on May 25, 1932. During their union, three children were born - one son and two daughters. Helen's Christian journey started early with her baptism at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, in Houston, Texas. She later united with Sloan Memorial United Methodist Church, under the pastorate of the late Rev. A. W. Carr, and exemplified her love for Christ through her dedicated service as a Communion Stewardess, a member of the United Methodist Women, a "Mother of the Year" honoree, and a strong supporter of any ministry effort related to Sloan UMC. Helen retired from Houston Independent School District's Food Service Department as the Cafeteria Manager at Helms Elementary School. Helen's parents, daughters - Hazel Mae Sherman and Lella Y. Manley, daughter-in-law - Betty J. Gordon, and grandchildren - Marion Gordon, Paul Gordon, Claude A. Bell, and Melissa Dukes - preceded her in death.
