Our loving mother, Hortencia, having lived a long and family-filled life, decided to get the rest she so richly deserved and left her loved ones. She left us physically, but her spirit and more importantly her love of family life lives on in all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Our mom was born during the First World War, became an adult during the Great Depression and saw her uncles, brothers and friends leave to fight in the Second World War. Along the way, she met our father, Salvador, and they decided that the East End of Houston was as good a place as any to start a family. It was at that point that our mom found her true vocation of raising a loving family. She did this by teaching each of her children that love wasn't just an emotion between two different people, but a feeling that should be shared by a family. She did this in small everyday ways, like making the perfect sandwich for a school lunch box, or making sure that just the right amount of bleach was used to get our socks as white as they could be. And it was these little things that her family missed in these last years that advanced age and mental confusion gave her family, most especially her daughters, the opportunity to give our mom her love back by taking care of her in her home so that she was able to slip into her rest in the place she loved the most. if there is one complaint that her family has, it was her reluctance to share her tortilla recipe (she made the best ones, of course); however she did teach all of her girls that you are never too young to start moisturizing your skin, so for that we will always be grateful and so will Estee Lauder.
