Irma O. Smith, 75, of Houston, Texas passed away on Thursday, January 13th at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was a devoted Mother, a Beloved Sister, a loving and caring Grandmother. Irma will be missed deeply by all her family and those who knew and loved her.
Irma was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on July 5th, 1946 and was the oldest of 7 siblings. She always had a spirit of kindness and this created a circle of many friends and family who loved her. One of her highlights as a young adult include being a beauty contest winner which the award was given to her by at the time State Representative, Former President George Bush!
Irma graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1964 as Valedictorian. Soon after she started her career with the Houston Police Department, Records Division where she worked for 36 years. She went on to become the department Supervisor, an achievement she was very proud of and a responsibility she took seriously. If you know Irma, you know that family was everything. She met Robert E. Smith a Sergeant at Houston Police Department while at work and not long after they married in February 3rd, 1980. When they married, they created a blended family both bringing with them children from previous marriages. Once married, their children were their whole life- Kris, Karlos, Andy and Kevin. Their schedules filled with baseball and softball games, soccer practices and endless camping and hunting adventures. These days were some of the BEST! So many wonderful memories created as a family and these were the stories that Irma loved to tell and hear about the most. She was so proud of being Mrs. Smith and all the wonderful crazy adventures that that entailed.
After the loss of her husband, Irma surrounded herself with her children, grandchildren and even her fur-grandchildren! Just as important to Irma were her parents and her siblings. She was devoted to both her beloved Papi and her mom. She did all she could to always be there for them and her brothers and sisters and helped them with anything they needed.
Irma always stood firm in her foundation of faith that was taught to her by her parents. She was a devoted Catholic all her life and believed in the power of prayer. Without fail she began and ended her days with daily prayers. The legacy that Irma leaves us with is of Faith and Kindness. She lived her days with both and set for us an example to follow in her footsteps. She will be missed beyond words here can say. The only comfort to us is knowing she is now in the presence of Our Father in Heaven and reunited with her husband, mother, father and sister. Oh, what a glorious reunion that must have been! For us here, such a huge feeling of sorrow and loss, but for her Oh Happy Day!
Irma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Smith; her mother, Octavia Valencia; father, Juan Valencia; and sister, Sally Garcia. Also, her nieces, Sally and Irene Garcia.
She is survived by her daughter and husband, Kris and William Smith, her son, Karlos Castillo, her stepson and wife, William Andrew and Roxanne Smith and stepson, Robert Kevin Smith. Her grandchildren, Karlee Castillo, Lauren and Cameron Cox, William Smith, Morgan Smith, Kevin Jr. Burnette, Ty Smith, Rayburn Smith, Katy Smith. Her great-grandchildren, Addison, Finn, and Cruz Cox. Her fur-grandbaby who loved her dearly – Rain Smith. Her siblings and spouses, Juan and Tillie Valencia, Ruben and Janet Valencia, Freddy and Meme Valencia and sisters, Sylvia Valencia and Claudia Horn along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
