Isabel Nuñez, 93, passed away on Monday, Dec 4, 2017 in Houston, TX. She was born on July 8, 1924 in Houston, the second child of Pedro Sanchez and Leonor Alvarado Sanchez. Her mother passed away when she was six and she was raised by her maternal grandmother Josefa Reyna Alvarado (Grandfather—Louis) during the “Great Depression”.
As a child, she worked at small jobs babysitting and as an errand girl to help her grandmother with expenses. This led to her having to leave school after completing the seventh grade so that she could continue to help her grandmother. An illness with Tuberculosis in her early 20s would keep her isolated for a year. She was strong in her belief that God would heal her and she refused to allow the doctors to cut her lung out. She believed that she was cured by using the advice she had received that limes and egg yolks would heal her. God did heal her and even though she always believed she was not meant for a long life she surprised herself with each passing year.
Isabel was an amazing woman as she was self-taught in many things: fluent in English and Spanish both reading and writing, composed songs, played the guitar, picked out tunes on the piano, was a great seamstress, sang and served at church and her children’s schools in many volunteer positions. Her love of people led her to help with the homeless, Spanish church members who needed help with translating, and was always ready to lend a hand with ill family members.
She cared for her many family members who were ill from cancer.
Being a member of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church was her joy in life. Isabel with the help of her daughter Rebecca led her to help grow new Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Spanish churches in Houston. Isabel loved the Lord, her church, her family and friends and she will be sorely missed.
Isabel was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ismael (Frank) Nuñez, Sr., and daughter, Rebecca Granados, sister Janie Nuñez, and brothers: Pedro (Pedrito) Sanchez, and Pete Sanchez. She is survived by her brothers: Joe A Sanchez, Frank Sanchez, and Joe Sanchez, sisters: Lupe Serda, Rose (Charlie) Herrera, Janie Martinez, brother in-law, Jesse Nuñez, sons: Ismael (Kathleen) Nuñez, Louis (Cindy) Nuñez, Edward (Elizabeth) Nuñez, and David (Joanne MacDougall) Nuñez and daughter, Ruth (Samuel) Villarreal. She was a very special and dear person to her 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and to her numerous nieces and nephews.
