The family moved to Settegast in Houston, Texas in 1952 and James eventually attended B. C. Elmore High School until enrolling in the U.S. Army in 1959, where he served two years before being honorably discharged.
James united with Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Pastor T. J. Compton shortly after the family moved to Settegast. He has been a faithful member since, serving on the Usher Board, in Brotherhood and as a Sunday School teacher.
On September 24, 1966 he and Helen Christine Burton were united in marriage by the late T. J. Compton. Unto this union two sons were born, Roland James Douglas and Clifton Lawrence Douglas.
After returning from the service, James spent 12 years working at Ally Fence Company before moving on to work at Good Year for 8 years. He then moved on to North Forest ISD where he worked in the maintenance department as a carpenter and painter for 22 years until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Ned Douglas and Allen Douglas, and his wife Helen Christine Burton. He leaves behind to cherish his memories: two sons, Roland James Douglas (Tarvia) and Clifton Lawrence Douglas; three grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Douglas, Sanaa Natarvia Douglas and Tyler Roland Douglas; godchildren Lakeitha Edwards and Devon Edwards; five sisters, Ester Douglas, Magnolia Hamilton-Roberts, Gladys Charles, Charlesetta Douglas and Vera Douglas; three brothers, Robert Douglas, Russ Douglas and Michael Douglas; a sister-in-law Willie Marie Burton along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
